Kamal Haasan’s recent remarks about the Kannada language have sparked a heated debate. The actor and president of the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party allegedly said that Kannada was “born out of Tamil” during an event in Chennai.
This comment has drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, with many accusing Haasan of disrespecting the Kannada language. In response to the backlash, Haasan clarified that his statement was made “out of love” and that he did not mean to offend anyone.
According to news agency ANI, Haasan said, “What I said was said out of love and a lot of historians have taught me language history. I didn’t mean anything.” He also suggested that the discussion on language should be left to historians, archaeologists, and language experts, rather than politicians.

Haasan’s comments have been slammed by several political leaders in Karnataka, including Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who said that Kannada has a rich and ancient history, and that Haasan’s statement reflected his ignorance about the language.
The state’s BJP chief, Vijayendra Yediyurappa, also criticized Haasan, calling his behavior “rude” and accusing him of insulting the Kannada language. Yediyurappa said that while everyone should love their mother tongue, it is unacceptable to show disrespect towards another language, especially among artists who should respect all languages.
This controversy has highlighted the sensitivities surrounding language and cultural identity in India, and the need for public figures to be mindful of their words and actions. Haasan’s film “Thug Life” is set to release soon, but the controversy surrounding his comments on the Kannada language has stolen the spotlight.
