It was a night Sherkhan Kalmurza won’t soon forget at Alvalade stadium. The young goalkeeper stepped onto a Champions League pitch, marking his debut in Europe’s biggest club competition. It was a massive moment for any player, but for Kalmurza, it carried extra weight.
He became one of the youngest ever to guard the net in this tournament. At just 18 years and 194 days old, the Kairat shot-stopper from Kazakhstan now ranks as the third-youngest goalkeeper in Champions League history. Only two Belgian talents have debuted at an even younger age: Vandevoordt, who played for Genk at 17 years and 287 days, and Svilar, who featured for Benfica when he was 18 years and 52 days old.
The match itself offered a rollercoaster of emotions for Kalmurza. He saw the ball hit the back of his net four times throughout the game. However, he also pulled off a brilliant save. Early on, he stared down a penalty kick from Hjulmand and managed to block it. That moment of brilliance stood out.
This penalty save brought up another interesting piece of history. Kalmurza’s feat places him in elite company. The record for the youngest goalkeeper to ever save a penalty in the Champions League still belongs to Svilar. That happened in 2017, when Svilar, playing for “the Eagles” (Benfica), stopped a penalty against Manchester United. He was 18 years and 65 days old at the time. So, while Kalmurza’s save was fantastic, Svilar still holds that specific mark by a narrow margin. For a young keeper, dealing with such high stakes is a testament to their potential.
