Julio Cedeño se corona en los 73 kilogramos del Panamericano de Bogotá

The Dominican Julio Cedeño reaped this Thursday the most significant triumph of his career when he was crowned the 73 kilograms in the Continental Championship of Weightlifting Seniors that takes place in the Colombian capital.

The native of El Seibo won two gold medals and one silver, showing the conditions that place him as one of the best male weightlifters in the country in the recent past.

It is the first time that Cedeño has won the category title in the highest weightlifting event on the continent.

The Quisqueyan dominated the clean and jerk modality with 174 kilos lifted and obtained silver in the snatch with a mark of 144, a combination that ultimately gave him the title of the division with a total of 318 kilos.

Cedeño emerged unscathed from a strategic “kilo by kilo” fight against Mexican opponents Jorge Adan Cárdenas Estrada and Jonathan Antonio Martínez Muñoz, who followed him in the order of places and ended up winning silver and bronze.

Cárdenas Estrada dominated the snatch modality to get the gold medal with a best lift of 145, against 144 for Cedeño and 143 for North American Jacob Christian Horst, who got the bronze.

Cedeño decided the test in his favor when he beat Cárdenas Estrada by four kilos in the clean and jerk specialty. The Dominican lifted 174 kilos, with 170 from the Aztec weightlifter, the same amount lifted by the other Mexican Martínez Muñoz.

The total of 319 kilos catapulted Cedeño to become champion of the division, against 315 from Cárdenas Estrada and 310 from Martínez Muñoz.

Ray Reyes achieves bronze

Another Dominican who won a medal this Thursday was the Petromacorisano Ray Reyes, who won a bronze in the clean and jerk of 81 kilograms.

Reyes did it with 174 kilos. He finished fourth in the snatch with 141 kilos and fourth overall with 315.

Gustavo Adolfo Maldonado, from Colombia, was the champion of the division with two gold and one bronze. He dominated the clean and jerk with 186 and the total with 329, as he lifted 143 in the snatch.

Darvin Castro, from Venezuela, dominated the snatch with 147 kilos and Juniel Muñoz Martínez, from Mexico, won the silver with 146.
