Julen Guerrero stops being U-17 coach

Julen Guerrero will not lead the U-17 team again. The RFEF has informed the Portugalete coach this Monday that he will not renew his contract, which ended on July 31, despite the fact that a little over a week ago he classified La Rojita for the next World Cup in the category. The news was advanced by Relevo and, As AS has been able to confirm, the decision had been made several months ago, regardless of the result achieved in the last Europeanin which Spain reached the semifinals.

Despite Julen’s good balance as U-17 coach (25 wins, four draws and only two losses), his way of working did not quite convince a part of the RFEF sports managementwho already several months ago dropped a message when, after the departure of Luis Enrique, he promoted Luis de la Fuente from the Sub-21 to the Absolute, Santi Denia from the Sub-19 to the Sub-21, but he left Julen in the Sub-17 instead of raising him to the Sub-19, which is currently in charge of José Lana, who was promoted from the Sub-16. Guerrero, who was caught by surprise by the decision, hoped to lead La Rojita in the next World Cup in November.

Now the RFEF must cover its gap. Curiously, less than a month ago he announced the reinstatement of David Gordo at the helm of the Under-15 and Under-16 categories. Gordo was the Under-17 coach until he was replaced by Julen in 2021. Since then, Spain has played the two European Championships that have been played, which they reached undefeated and in which they lost to Portugal in the quarterfinals in 2022 and against France in the semifinals, just a week ago.
