Former Spanish international Julen Guerrero has taken on a new role leading youth development at Portuguese football club Benfica, aiming to strengthen its acclaimed academy and support senior team coach José Mourinho.
Guerrero expressed his commitment to preparing young players for first-team integration. He wants to ensure that any youth player called upon by Mourinho is fully prepared for the challenge.

The move came after an invitation from João Diogo Manteigas, a mutual acquaintance. Manteigas conveyed specific interests regarding Benfica’s youth formation, which Guerrero found compelling.
Guerrero, who has extensive experience in youth football with Athletic Bilbao and the Spanish national team, seeks to share his knowledge and expertise. He views this as a significant opportunity to blend his background with Benfica’s “history, greatness, and passion.”
He has long held Benfica’s academy in high regard. During his time with the Spanish Football Federation, he often observed its consistent production of talented young players.
He was frequently struck by the number of Benfica players featuring in Portugal’s youth squads.
Guerrero also holds deep admiration for Benfica President Rui Costa, describing him as an “extraordinary player.” He acknowledged their current roles, stating his focus is on his development project rather than any sense of rivalry.
He emphasized that his goal is to implement a youth development program suitable not just for Benfica but for any top European team.
