Joventut meets London Lions in the round of 16

Joventut Badalona closed the regular Eurocup basketball league with a placid victory over Lithuanian Lietkabelis Panevezys (81-60), which did not help them to storm the lead due to the victory of the first classified, Prometey Slobozhanske.

Simon Birgander (11 points and 12 rebounds) was the most outstanding player in the choral display of the green and black team, which after finishing second in group A will face the seventh in group B, the English London Lions, in the round of 16. Although the victory of Prometey Slobozhanske hours earlier against Umana Reyer Venice (93-76) sealed the fate of both teams, Joventut took to the court determined to rediscover victory and bring joy to their fans.

The disparity in the competitive tension was evident with the initial 12-0 (min.3). The young Yannick Kraag took advantage of the opportunity to shine, with ten points in the first quarter and two dunks that delighted the public (21-6, min.8). The green-and-black team extended their advantage at the beginning of the second quarter (29-9, min.13), boosted by the energy of Brodziansky and Guy coming off the bench.

Penya felt so superior that she ended up catching her opponent’s negligence. Lietkabelis improved by limiting losses, which led Joventut to relapse into the outside mistake by not being able to run. Despite the solidity of Birgander, the best of the game at the break with 8 points and 7 rebounds, the Lithuanian team tightened the score (37-28) thanks to inside scoring (1 of 10 on three-pointers). The visitors’ reaction, driven by Popovic and Kullamae, continued after the intermission.

The Lithuanian team got close to seven points, but Joventut woke up after a timeout by Duran to leave the game seen for judgment (52-35, min.26). The defensive toughness boosted the offensive fluidity in transition and Guy’s triples finished knocking out Lietkabelis (62-39, min.40). The formal last quarter only served for Duran to manage efforts thinking about what is to come (81-60).
