Journalist commits suicide in newsroom over non-payment of salary

In India, a journalist ended his life in a newsroom for non-payment of salary.

According to Indian media reports, a senior journalist in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu has committed suicide in the newsroom for allegedly not receiving his salary, which has caused great grief and anger in the Indian journalist community.

The tragic incident took place on Sunday evening when 56-year-old photojournalist T Kumar, affiliated with the Indian news agency United News of India (UNI), was found dead in his office by his colleagues a day later on Monday.

The journalist’s death has raised questions about non-payment of salaries and deep financial problems facing journalists, as UNI employees have accused the agency of not paying them salaries for the past 60 months.

Employees said in a statement that Kumar was facing financial difficulties as he was not receiving regular salary from the agency.

However, UNI Editor-in-Chief Ajay Kumar Cole termed it as a tragic incident and said that the police should properly investigate the matter.

“As far as we know, he did not leave a single suicide note in which the late journalist wrote that he was taking extreme measures due to financial pressure or non-payment of salary, as some media outlets did,” he said. Has reported.

The editor-in-chief added: “Some people are spreading misinformation in this regard. Was it suicide or something else? We want the police to investigate properly.

According to Indian media, Kumar’s bereaved family includes a wife, a son and a daughter.

The chief minister also announced a compensation of Rs 300,000 for his family, while opposition leader Palani Swamy demanded payment of Rs 2.5 million to Kumar’s family from the chief minister’s welfare fund for journalists.
