José Abreu says he is ready to make the Houston Astros better

Cuban first baseman José Abreu declared himself this Tuesday ready to help make the Houston Astros a better team for the 2023 Major League Baseball season.

"We come to work and give our best. I come to be able to help make it better"Abreu said when referring to the team that won the World Series last season.

The powerful Cuban hitter was officially presented today as a new member of the Astros, with whom he reached a three-year agreement in exchange for 58.5 million dollars.

The 35-year-old player revealed that his plan and that of his agent was focused on joining the Houston franchise.

"I think since the last out of the World Series, my focus and my agent’s focus was to be part of this great family."specified Abreu, who thanked the owner of the Astros, Jim Crane, who accompanied him in today’s presentation, for the opportunity to join what the Cuban defines as "a big family".

"The important thing about all of this is that I want to be part of a great family, in six years the Astros have made a great family and I want to be part of a great family."pointed out the Most Valuable Player of the 2020 American League season.

Abreu is coming off a season in which he had a good batting average (.304), but only hit 15 home runs and drove in 75 runs, stats that showed a big decline in his production with the bat.

In this sense, the player admitted that his performance did not live up to what is expected of him, but despite this he was sure that he will return to that status with the bat.

"I have badly accustomed people to hitting 30 (home runs) every year, but it is no less true that they were not there (their usual statistics), but that does not mean that they will not be"Abreus said.

In his presentation, Abreu also referred to his compatriot Yuli Gurriel, who has been part of the team for the last seven years and who is now in free agency.

"I have a lot of respect for Yuli (Gurriel). It has been a milestone for this great family and one to which I had a long time in Cuba playing with the national team. I understand that she is part of a business and from me I wish that life gives her the opportunity to continue in the Major Leagues."said.

Over his nine seasons with the Chicago White Sox, Abreu understands that he gave his all on the field in every game he played with the American League Central team.

"I left a lot of legacy of respect for the game with the White Sox."indicated.

On whether he feels pleased with what he has achieved so far, he pointed out that he lives pleased "with what life gives me".

In his nine-year career in the majors, Abreu has a .292 batting average, has hit 243 home runs and has driven in 863 runs.

In his showcase he has two RBI and one hit lead, in addition to the Rookie of the Year (2014) and Most Valuable Player (2020) awards.

Abreu, winner of three Silver Sluggers, has also attended three All-Star Games.

On the other hand, the Pittsburgh Pirates made official today the agreement signed with the Dominican first baseman and designated hitter, Carlos Santana.

The agreement with Santana, 36, is for one season and will bring the hitter of both hands, the sum of 6.7 million dollars.

Last season Santana split his playing time between the Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners, finishing the season with 19 home runs and 60 RBIs while batting as low as .202.
