Jorge Alfaro decides: Licey with 3 in the ninth leaves Gigantes on the field

Jorge Alfaro capped off a three-run ninth inning with a run-scoring single and the Tigres del Licey left the Gigantes del Cibao on the field by beating them 5-4 in Sunday’s game held at the Quisqueya Juan Marichal stadium in the continuation of the Round Robin of the autumn winter baseball tournament Don Tomás Troncoso Cuesta.

Singles by Jorge Bonifacio and Yeison Asencio together with an error by first baseman Yamaico Navarro on a hit by Sergio Alcántara caused the tie at 4 against closer Fernando Rodney. A walk to Emilio Bonifacio and a fly ball by Ronny Mauricio preceded Alfaro’s game-winning hit.

With the win, the Tigers raised their record to 8-6 to take first place in the Round Robin with the Eastern Stars. The Giants, on their side, saw their record drop to 6-8.

Raúl Valdés was the starter for the Tigers with a 6.1 innings, 5 hits, one earned run, two walks and four strikeouts. He was followed on the mound by Jonathan Aro (7), Jean Carlos Mejía (8), Jairo Asencio (9) and Alfredo Simón (9).

Wily Peralta started for the Giants. In 5 innings he allowed two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. The work in the box was completed by José Leclerc (6), Emmanuel Ramírez (7), Jeurys Familia (8), Juan Minaya (8) and Rodney (9).

Simon was the winning pitcher and Rodney took the loss.

After two outs in the Giants’ third inning, Dairon Blanco lined a triple through center field and came home with a single by Erik González through second base.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers revolted against reliever Jeurys Familia. After two outs, Emilio Bonifacio reached the pitcher’s premises with a single and entered the race with a hit to Ronny Mauricio’s right field in an aggressive run from first base. Mauricio moved to second with the throw to the plate and Jorge Alfaro was intentionally walked before De León’s hit.

The Giants scored three runs against closer Jairo Asencio in the first part of the ninth inning, taking advantage of an error by third baseman Mauricio on a hit by Iván Castillo, a single by Dairon Blanco and Erik González, to shortstop, to load the bases. Yamaico Navarro reached on a fielder’s choice down the 6-4-3 track with a force out at second to tie the game. Henry Urrutia with a hit to the right field and Luis Liberato with a double to the left completed the tows.
