Jon Rahm of Spain and Justin Thomas of the United States delivered a signed 63-stroke scorecard (-8) upon completing the first round of the Northern Trust tournament, PGA Tour, which allowed them to share the lead with three shots ahead.
Rahm, who was returning to the competition after having overcome his second positive for covid-19, the last one that cost him to miss the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games with the Spanish team, showed his best level of play by being perfect with eight birdies that distributed in both halves of the route.
Thomas made nine birdies, but bogey, on par 4 of the 15th hole, that prevented him from also having a perfect round at the Liberty National Golf Club, in Jersey City (New Jersey), where the tournament is held.
American Harold Varner III ranked third with a record of 66 strokes (-5), while six other players, led by compatriot Robert Streb, shared fourth place.
Colombian Sebastián Muñoz, who had a record of 68 strokes (-3), topped the list of four players who finished in tenth place.
Muñoz had four birdies, including three in the second half of the round after the first ended with a birdie and bogey deal., which he did in par 4 of the ninth.
The Mexican Carlos Ortiz finished fifteenth with a record of 69 strokes (-2), while the Argentine Emiliano Grillo and the Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas had a record of 70 (-1) that placed them in thirty-fourth place with options to overcome the cut tomorrow, Friday, and be able to be in the weekend’s competition.
To which the Chilean also aspires JoaquÃn Niemann who presented a signed card of 71 strokes (pair) that allowed him to place in position 52.
It will be more complicated for the Mexican Abraham Ancer who dropped to 72nd after he had a record of 72 (+1) and Spanish Sergio GarcÃa who delivered a signed card of 75 (+4).
