Jokic beats Antetokounmpo in the MVP battle

The Denver Nuggets have given themselves a shot of self-esteem tonight by beating the fittest (and surely the best) team in the League. In fact, the loss of the Milwaukee Bucks is the fourth in the last two months. They still have two games ahead of the Boston Celtics and the first place in the East does not seem to be in danger except for a final catastrophe. Neither is the one in the West, occupied by some Nuggets who take three and a half victories from their closest pursuer, the Memphis Grizzlies.

We said that it is an adrenaline shot for the Nuggets because for a while they do not seem like the reliable team that they have been for most of the season. For example, they’re 5-5 in their last ten games, an unremarkable record for a conference leader. But today they did put on track the arguments that have led them to command the West for months. Especially in a third quarter in which they broke the game with a 34-19 run.

Until the break things were much more even. And much more if we compare it with the other duel between these two teams in Milwaukee on January 25, in which Mike Malone, coach of the Nuggets, decided to rest four of his five starters. Today they were all, also in the Bucks, and the visitors went ahead at halftime. In the first two quarters Giannis Antetokounmpo made 24 of his 31 points, making 11 of 14 shots, all but one under the basket. But the second part was another song.

The two-time MVP ran out of ideas and even starred despite himself, being posterized by Jeff Green at the beginning of the last period. At that point the Nuggets had already broken through. A 3-pointer right after Grayson Allen was the Bucks’ last attempt to hold on in the game. They were down 12 with 10 minutes remaining, but they shot the next 4 without scoring a single basket. When they wanted to realize it, they were losing 20. In the Nuggets, the other double MVP of the game, Nikola Jokic, stood out with 31 points, 6 rebounds and 11 assists. Also Jamal Murray, with 26 points and 50% in triples, in addition to distributing 9 basket passes.

Between Jokic and Giannis the MVP may be again, as long as Joel Embiid does not prevent it. The two highest representatives of European basketball in the world together with Luka Doncic have once again completed an exemplary regular season and they want to extend a streak that, on the other hand, Embiid would not break, and that is still incredible. No American player is considered the best of the season in the NBA since 2018. Globalization was this.
