Mogadishu: At least eight people, including students, were killed Thursday in a massive explosion outside a school in the Somali capital Mogadishu. Eyewitnesses gave this information. At the same time, the extremist organization al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the explosion. Al-Qaeda affiliated Al-Shabaab controls much of rural Somalia and continues to obstruct the country’s rebuilding work after three decades of conflict.

A plume of smoke rose in Mogadishu after the explosion Thursday morning. A part of the school collapsed due to the explosion and emergency personnel were seen searching for the injured among the collapsed ceiling and wooden furniture. Police spokesman Abdifatah Adam Hassan said eight people were killed and 17 others injured in the blast.

The extremist group al-Shabaab said in a statement on its Andalusian radio that it had targeted Western officials guarding an African Union peacekeeping convoy, while Hassan Ali, an eyewitness, said the security company The private company was in charge of the security of the officers. Ali said he saw four members of the security personnel injured. Let us tell you that groups linked to Al Qaeda often carry out attacks in the capital.
