Jey One was a barber in Villa María, capital sector, when a year ago the urban gang found him with scissors in hand, which he released until today’s sun when the song “Onana” makes him the Dominican dembowsero that sets trends on YouTube .
His last day of work at the barbershop came hand in hand with the song “Bilibob”, which began to spread from neighborhood to neighborhood until it reached his own ears in the streets of Villa María.
“It was a Sunday, I wanted to go to the circuit, I wanted to leave early and I went out and when I go out the first thing I run into is one of those buses that have the horns that they announce with the Bilibob (at full volume), I got nervous, I recorded a video…”, he said in an interview with El Dotol Nastra.
In his endeavors as a barber, he earned up to 13,000 pesos during a weekend, but his dream was to hit urban music, an area in which he cultivated since his childhood, since he came to study music in Fine Arts (“I know play guitar in case you didn’t know,” he told Dotol Nastra).
After listening to his song in the neighborhood, the next day, his promoter La Ganga comes and tells him that he has a party somewhere, a show for which he would be paid. “I told him: – Manito, if three more come in, I’ll stop fighting.” And so it was. Until that day he was a barber to become an urban singer and months later the one with the biggest punch in Santo Domingo.
In addition to “Onana” and “Bilibob” he is known for “A Terror”, “Esquina Fogón” and others.
He is credited with injecting a remarkable change into the dembow since his appearance with the “Bilibob” almost a year ago: “The one who changed the moment with the Bilibob was me.”
“When I entered with the Bilibob I brought another color, which was the touch of the song, that I brought it back, rapiao and intonao, what happened was that people liked the intonao more, then the intonato was put in,” he commented to Dotol Nastra.
Now it remains to be seen whether it will be able to maintain that validity in time because in many cases after the big hit comes stagnation. He takes it easy and trusts that yes: “Here we have that vision that the artist arrives, it lasts two months, but in truth I believe that the knees that I have given is not to stay there, I know what I have been through That’s why I’m working on my music in an organized way, I try to give the public what I am…”.
Then he added: “The knees that I have given, with the project that I know and with the seven hundred thousand songs that I have here, I doubt that will happen to me.”
In his personal life, He is married, although now women rain down on him. He, laughing, says that he is faithful, calm, and that he wants to capitalize on his life, establishing priorities such as music and a company, a great barbershop. He is the father of a girl. And he already visualizes her in music: “Loli Pop, the patroness of the genre, when she grows up, wait for her.”
