Jeff Bezos, the man behind Amazon and Blue Origin, has a bold vision for the future of computing. He believes we could see giant data centers operating in space within the next decade or two. These massive facilities would harness gigawatts of power, far outperforming their earthly counterparts.
Bezos shared this forward-looking idea at Italian Tech Week in Turin, Italy. He spoke during a session with John Elkann, who leads both Ferrari and Stellantis. Bezos explained that Earth is quickly reaching a point where it will need these enormous, power-hungry data centers.
He pointed out a key advantage for space-based operations. They would get constant sunlight, without any clouds, rain, or other weather getting in the way. This steady energy supply would ultimately make them a better value compared to data centers built on the ground.
News agency Reuters has reported that major technology companies are already showing interest in the idea of space data centers. This growing curiosity comes as the energy demands for today’s ground-based data centers are skyrocketing at an incredible pace.
