Jaya Bachchan: Marriage “Outdated Concept” for Granddaughter Navya

Veteran actress and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, Jaya Bachchan, has once again ignited public discourse with her candid remarks on marriage and modern relationships. Speaking at a recent event, Bachchan revealed that she does not wish for her granddaughter, Navya Naveli Nanda, to marry, asserting that the traditional concept of marriage has become outdated for the current generation.

Bachchan, known for her fearless and outspoken opinions on various societal matters, shared her thoughts during the ‘We The Women’ platform. The 77-year-old explained that today’s youth are exceptionally smart and self-reliant, fully capable of making their own life decisions without the pressure of conventional expectations. She emphasized that traditional mindsets should not dictate their choices.

The acclaimed actress reflected on her own past, acknowledging that she faced limitations and societal constraints during her time. However, she expressed genuine happiness and pride in witnessing the younger generation enjoy greater freedom and independence to shape their lives as they see fit. Her progressive stance resonated with many online, sparking widespread conversation.

Bachchan humorously likened marriage to a well-known Hindi idiom, “Delhi ke laddu,” implying that both getting married and remaining single present their own set of challenges and potential regrets. Her comment suggested that neither path is inherently easier or without its complexities.

Addressing the topic of having children before marriage, Bachchan offered a clear perspective. She stressed that the foundational element of any relationship should always be love, and this affection should serve as the basis for all crucial decisions. For Bachchan, the presence of love and mutual respect within a relationship is far more important than adhering to societal expectations, as these qualities are what truly bind a family together.
