Jasikevicius: “Why do we need to wait for the final minutes?”

Sarunas Jasikevicius regretted that his players did not take to the court with the necessary intensity to face Zalgiris in Kaunas on Thursday, although the azulgrana team improved in the second half and could have ended up winning (73-72), but lost. “In the final minutes, the game can fall on either side. Why do we need to wait for the final minutes? And why don’t we play with this starting intensity?”, the Lithuanian coach wondered after the match.

Jasikevicius took responsibility for the team’s poor start: “I couldn’t get my boys to understand how hard they had to play today. We have come out very soft, with a bad mentality. You are not going to win many away games playing like this in the Euroleague. I have to try to reach the players better and I have not succeeded”. “The final play has gone as we thought. We had many opportunities in the last few seconds to shoot. I’m happy with this”, explained the Barça coach despite the final disappointment.

Jasikevicius praised the performance of Cory Higgins, scorer of 10 points and decisive in the Barça improvement: “He is in his line and we are happy with him. We understand that this is very long and coming from a long-term injury. Today the team has been put on his back and has been an important factor in the third and last quarter. You are taking important steps forward”. “We didn’t go out on the court with the right mentality and we had to fight to get back into the game. We managed to come back, but in the end they defeated us. We have to learn and continue. It’s a long season”, summed up Higgins himself. Finally, Barça reported that forward Álex Abrines, who withdrew from the game after receiving an elbow to the head in a fortuitous set, suffers a “mild head injury”.
