Japan LDP Forms Coalition, Sanae Takaichi Poised to Be First Female PM

Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party has finalized a critical coalition agreement with the Japan Innovation Party, positioning Sanae Takaichi to become the country’s first female prime minister ahead of a parliamentary vote today.

The alliance was formalized through an agreement signed by Ms. Takaichi, the LDP leader, and Hirofumi Yoshimura, head of the Japan Innovation Party (JIP), at the Parliament building. This pact is designed to garner sufficient support for Ms. Takaichi’s premiership.

This new political alignment comes after the Komeito party, the LDP’s long-standing coalition partner, announced its withdrawal earlier in October. That decision ended a 26-year cooperative relationship.

Ms. Takaichi expressed her optimism about the new partnership. She stated that it marks a fresh start for both parties to strengthen Japan’s economy and to empower the nation to address the future needs of coming generations. She added that she looks forward to their joint efforts.

Mr. Yoshimura echoed this sentiment, affirming JIP’s commitment to its reform agenda. He highlighted a shared objective of improving Japan and fostering a nation where children can grow up feeling proud of their country.

The coalition is crucial for the LDP, which remains the largest party in parliament but does not hold an outright majority. The alliance with JIP aims to bridge that gap.

Komeito’s departure occurred just one week after Ms. Takaichi assumed leadership of the LDP. The Japanese Parliament is scheduled to vote on the new Prime Minister later today.

Under the new agreement, both parties have committed to jointly advance policies across several key areas. These include the economy, finance, international security, national security, and energy.
