Jaishankar meets working group on Security Council reforms

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Friday met leaders of a group working to reform the Security Council to reinvigorate their issues. The 42-member Group of Developing Countries, known as L.69 after the original resolution on Council reforms, presented at the high-level General Assembly ‘Reinforcing multilateralism: a call to action for comprehensive Security Council reform’ met on the subject.

Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting

“Global South is working together towards this goal,” Jaishankar tweeted after the meeting. He referred to the context of developing countries dominating the Southern Hemisphere.

He began the day by meeting Ralph Gonsalves, the President of the Caribbean nation of St. Vincent and the Grenadines. “Appreciate his vast knowledge on global development. Received this in his new book: ‘A Time of Respire’,” the Indian minister tweeted. Gonsalves presented him a book that talks about the hopes of rebuilding after the COVID pandemic and natural disasters.

Agreement on Partnership on Humanitarian and Disaster Relief Signed

The highlight of Jaishankar’s morning was his participation in the Quad foreign ministers meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Foreign Ministers Penny Wong of Australia and Yoshimasa Hayashi of Japan. The ministers decided to meet every year on the sidelines of the General Assembly meeting and sign an agreement on the Partnership on Humanitarian and Disaster Relief.
