Actress Ivory Aquino joins the cast of Batgirl to bring to life the first transgender character in a DC film. The interpreter will play Alysia Yeoh in the film being prepared by Warner Bros. that will premiere on HBO Max and will star Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon.

It was precisely the Deadline medium who was the first to confirm the incorporation of Aquino officially. Although her inclusion in the cast had already been speculated before, since the protagonist of the film herself shared a photo with Aquino on her Instagram profile in early January.

Aquino, who is best known for her role in the miniseries When We Rise in which she played Cecilia Chung, an activist for the rights of the trans collective, will play here Alysia Yeoh, the best friend of the protagonist, Barbara Gordon.

Both Aquino and Yeoh are transgender and, although the character of the actress will be the first trans to be incorporated into a DC film, on television it was in 2018 when Nicole Maines set a precedent playing the heroine Nia Nals, also known as Dreamer in the Supergirl series.

The Batgirl movie, for which there is still no specific release date on the platform that will arrive this year, will follow the adventures of Barbara Gordon (Leslie Grace), Commissioner Gordon’s daughter who secretly assumes the identity of the vigilante Batgirl. The film, which will be directed by directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, will also feature Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly, actor Jacob Scipio in a yet unknown role, and the return of Michael Keaton’s Batman, whose presence is also confirmed in TheFlash.
