Iúri Leitão Wins Barcelona Track Omnium; Narciso, Martins Secure Podiums

Portuguese success at the International City of Barcelona Trophy

What a performance! Track cyclist Iúri Leitão absolutely dominated the 21st International City of Barcelona Trophy – XII Miguel Poblet Memorial. He snagged his second victory today, showing everyone why he’s one to watch. His teammates, Diogo Narciso and Maria Martins, also made their mark, both claiming impressive second-place finishes.

Leitão, already an Olympic vice-champion in the Omnium, put on a masterclass in this demanding four-part event. He stayed strong from the very first race, collecting a phenomenal 212 points. Not far behind was fellow athlete Diogo Narciso, who scored 178 points for a solid second place. The Netherlands’ Justus Willemsen rounded out the top three with 134 points.

Just a few days earlier, on Friday, this dynamic duo of Leitão and Narciso had already teamed up for a big win in the Madison event. It’s worth remembering that Leitão previously struck Olympic gold in the Madison at Paris 2024, riding alongside Ivo Oliveira. This latest victory just adds to his impressive resume.

The women weren’t to be outdone. Maria Martins secured a well-deserved second place in her Omnium competition, earning 129 points. She finished just behind Norway’s Anita Stenberg, who took the top spot with 166 points. Daniela Campos also competed, finishing eighth with 88 points, despite a tough fall during the elimination race. Her resilience was clear for all to see.

“We had a really good day,” said national selector Gabriel Mendes, speaking to the Portuguese Cycling Federation’s media. He added, “The Omnium program is always tough. It demands a lot from the athletes all day long. Everyone performed excellently and did a fantastic job, always trying their best in the different races.” His words highlighted the team’s commitment and passion on the track.
