It's hard to guess what LG's latest invention is for based on its looks alone.

LG Labs, the experimental division of the South Korean company, has announced this DukeBox, which combines the sound of sophisticated vacuum tubes with an OLED display that offers an adjustable level of transparency.

DukeBox is a mix of a very high quality speaker and a transparent screen. Sound is output through front-facing speakers at the bottom and a 360-degree speaker at the top.

Thanks to the adjustable transparency level, you can leave the screen completely transparent to admire the vacuum tubes inside, or semi-transparent with a chimney option that simulates the vacuum tubes being between flames. You can also make it opaque to play a movie like a traditional OLED screen.

LG has not revealed the detailed technical specifications of the product, but this is not unusual as this is an experimental product. Vacuum tubes are an audio technology reserved for the most demanding users with sound quality.

We also don't know the price or marketing plans, but it will be shown at CES 2024. In any case, it will not be a product for all target groups, but it will cost a lot of money.
