Italy Retains Fifth Volleyball World Championship, Beats Bulgaria 3-1

The celebration of the Italian national team for winning another world volleyball title

The Italian men’s volleyball team stood tall on Sunday, claiming their fifth world title. They defended their crown against Bulgaria in a hard-fought final, winning 3-1. The championship match took place in Pasay, Philippines, marking another glorious chapter for the Italian side.

This victory adds to Italy’s impressive collection of world titles, following triumphs in 1990, 1994, 1998, and 2022. The match unfolded with Italy grabbing the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-17. Bulgaria, the same squad that had knocked Portugal out of the round of 16, pushed back by taking the third set, 25-17. But Italy closed the show with a dominant 25-10 win in the fourth set.

Italy’s success now places them just one title shy of the legendary Soviet Union team, which holds six world championships won between 1949 and 1982. This latest win also puts some distance between Italy and other volleyball powerhouses like Brazil and Poland, who each boast three world titles. It’s clear the Italians are cementing their status at the top.

In the bronze medal match, Poland secured third place. They were the runners-up in the 2022 tournament. Poland defeated the Czech Republic with a 3-1 score. The set scores for that contest were 25-18, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-21.
