Italy: eight dead after a landslide on the island of Ischia, according to Matteo Salvini, the vice-president of the Council of Ministers

“There are eight confirmed dead, after the landslide in Ischia”announced the Vice-President of the Italian Council of Ministers and Minister of Infrastructure, Matteo Salvini, on Saturday 26 november. The landslide, caused by heavy rains on this island off the coast of Naples, happened in the town of Casamicciola Terme (north of the island). He took away “a house” and dragged several cars into the sea, the fire department initially said.

A car found in the sea had two people on board, but they were able to be rescued, firefighters added. Local authorities have urged residents of the island to stay at home, so as not to interfere with rescue operations.

Casamicciola Terme, a spa resort with 8,000 inhabitants in winter, had already suffered an earthquake in 2017 that killed two people. It had, however, been completely destroyed by a much more powerful earthquake at the end of the 19th century.
