Italy decrees a state of emergency to deal with the reception of Ukrainian refugees

The Government of Italy declared this Monday "unanimously" the state of emergency until the end of the year at a meeting of the Council of Ministers to deal with the expected influx of refugees from Ukraine.

"(Italy) has decided to declare a state of emergency until December 31, 2022 in order to guarantee relief and assistance to the Ukrainian population on the national territory as a result of the ongoing serious international crisis"according to information collected by the Italian newspaper ‘Il Giorno’.

Specifically, a decree law has been approved that introduces new urgent measures in relation to the evolution of the crisis in Ukraine after the invasion of Russia, as reported by Palazzo Chigi in a statement.

The measure provides for an intervention by Italy to guarantee support and assistance to the Ukrainian people by transferring means, materials and military equipment to the Ukrainian government authorities.

The Italian Council of Ministers has decided to increase relief and assistance measures for people seeking refuge in the European Union. In this sense, 10 million euros have been allocated from the National Emergency Fund to allow the execution of the most urgent interventions.

Likewise, a special fund of 500,000 euros has been created to finance support measures for Ukrainian students, researchers and professors so that they can carry out their activities in Italian universities, higher artistic and musical education institutions and research organisations.

The countries of the European Union approved their sanctions against Russia on Friday for the large-scale attack against Ukraine in a battery that includes restrictions on banks, energy, finance, exports, transport and visa policy, in addition to personal sanctions against the Russian president. , Vladimir Putin, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
