Israel Releases Gaza Medic Detained After Deadly Attack on Emergency Convoy

Israel has released Assad Al-Nassar, a Palestinian rescue worker it detained after attacking an emergency convoy in southern Gaza last month. The attack killed 15 people, including medical staff and UN personnel.

Al-Nassar was one of 10 detainees released at the border crossing into Gaza on Tuesday. The Israeli military hasn’t commented on his release but confirmed they held him temporarily during an investigation into the convoy attack.

The investigation found several failures in the operation. The attack happened on March 23 in Tal Al-Sultan, Rafah, killing eight Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) rescue workers, six Gaza Civil Defense officials, and a UN employee.

Their bodies were found a week later, buried in shallow graves near overturned vehicles. Another PRCS official survived, claiming Israel released him after detaining him alongside Al-Nassar.

On April 20, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) released its investigation findings. They said troops attacked believing they faced a threat from enemy forces. The IDF claimed six victims were Hamas members and denied allegations of executions.

Questions Over IDF Claims

The IDF hasn’t provided evidence linking the six victims to Hamas. The convoy was clearly marked with emergency lights and agency signage during the attack.

The BBC reported on the incident, providing context for the IDF’s investigation.
