Israel recognized Western Sahara as part of Morocco

The Moroccan government has said that Israel has recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

The Royal Palace of Morocco said in a statement that Israel’s position was expressed in a letter written by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to King Mohammed VI.

The Algerian-backed Polisario Front is demanding an independent state in Western Sahara. In 2020, then-US President Donald Trump recognized Morocco’s claim to the territory in exchange for a partial upgrade in relations with Israel.

A statement from the Moroccan royal palace cited the letter as saying that the Israeli position "It will be sent to the United Nations, regional and international organizations, as well as to all states with which Israel has diplomatic relations.”

A senior government official told Reuters news agency that Israel’s position on Western Sahara "”Clear” and it is in favor of Morocco and came out as part of it. Apart from Washington and Madrid, other European capitals supported the autonomy plan for the region.

He added that Morocco’s defense of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by recognizing Israel "Principles” will not be affected.

In 2020, Morocco agreed to normalize relations with Israel in a US-brokered deal. As part of the deal, Trump agreed to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.

Morocco became the fourth country to sign an agreement aimed at normalizing relations with Israel. Earlier, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan were among the countries that signed the agreements.

Palestinians have criticized the deal, saying Arab countries have sidelined the cause of peace by abandoning a long-standing demand that Israel cede land to a Palestinian state before recognizing it.
