Israel Embassy Marks 77th Anniversary with Scaled-Down Celebration

The Israeli embassy marked 77 years since the country’s establishment with a low-key ceremony. This year’s event was toned down due to the ongoing impact of the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack by Hamas. Over 1,200 people died, including 41 Thai workers. More than 250 people were taken hostage to Gaza, with 58 still being held, including three Thais.

A somber celebration

The ceremony took place at the Carlton Hotel in Bangkok. It highlighted the Israel-Thailand Friendship Award for 2024. This award honors individuals who have consistently supported Israel through good times and bad. The winners’ unwavering support is invaluable.

Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, congratulated the Israeli government and people. He praised Israel’s progress in innovation, science, technology, and agriculture, which serves as a model for other countries.

A message from the ambassador

Orna Sakhi, Israeli Ambassador to Thailand, spoke about her experience in the country. She will soon complete her four-year term and return to Israel. Sakhi started her mission during the COVID-19 pandemic and has seen the country through tough times. Despite challenges, she has been heartened by the warm welcome from Thais and the strength of the partnership between the two nations. Sakhi is confident that the friendship between Israel and Thailand will continue to flourish.
