Israel Confirms Hamas Military Leader Mohammed Sinwar Killed in Airstrike

Israel confirms the death of Mohammed Sinwar, a top Hamas military leader, in a mid-May airstrike. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) made the announcement on Saturday, May 31, 2023. Sinwar was killed alongside Mohammed Sabaneh, commander of the Rafah battalion, and Mahdi Qara, commander of the southern Khan Younis battalion.

The three were operating in an underground command center at the European Hospital in Khan Younis. The IDF claims this put civilians in and around the hospital at risk. On May 13, the Gaza Civil Defense, run by Hamas, reported 28 deaths and several injuries after Israeli warplanes dropped six bombs on the hospital.

An independent journalist working for the BBC was among those injured. Mohammed Sinwar is the brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former Hamas leader who helped plan a major attack on Israel on October 7, 2022. This attack sparked the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. Yahya Sinwar was killed by the Israeli military in October 2022.
