The terrorist’s threat is a serious matter, made with the firm intention of carrying out their criminal plans. The success of these plans depends on various factors, including the effectiveness of security forces and intelligence services. It is misguided to think that jihadist threats are merely part of a media campaign. This mindset can be detrimental and even suicidal.
In recent times, the plight of Christians in Africa has highlighted the reality of these threats. A message from the Islamic State, conveyed through the Azaim channel, leaves little room for doubt. The message is clear: convert to Islam or face death. This threat is directed at believers worldwide, emphasizing that Islam is the true religion and that all other beliefs are false. The message states, “To the Christians! This is a message for the Christians of America and the world: we call them Islam before the soldiers of the earth and the soldiers of the skies descend on you! Islam is the true religion, everything else is false and Allah will not accept anything else. That is why ‘ISSA, La Paz is with him, will descend at the end of time, offering you the choice between Islam or death. Now we are giving you this call before death comes to you everywhere: “With a punishment from him or by our hands.” This is Allah’s promise.”
Understanding the Threat
Western societies often seem to be in a state of denial about the dangers posed by such threats. They tend to respond only when attacks occur within their own territories. This reactive approach can be seen as a form of ignorance, choosing to overlook the imminent danger that exists.
Jihadists have found that using lone actors or “lone wolves” is an effective strategy to terrorize populations. These attacks are not only psychologically damaging but also economically cost-effective for the perpetrators. Attributing such attacks to mental health issues rather than acknowledging the ideological motivation behind them does not address the root of the problem. The Islamic State has even claimed that while they may not directly claim responsibility for these attacks, they are often inspired by their ideology. Downplaying the danger does not make it disappear; instead, it allows the threat to persist.
