For actress Isha Koppikar, the arrival of Ganpati Bappa isn’t just an annual event. It’s a profound journey of joy and spiritual guidance that touches her very core. She recently opened up to Amar Ujala about the deep personal meaning of Ganesh Utsav.
The festive spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi lights up homes everywhere with devotion and excitement. For Isha, this tradition dates back to her own childhood. Now, she welcomes Ganpati Bappa with the same enthusiasm, sharing this special time with her daughter, Riana. It’s a beautiful way for them to connect with their roots.
When asked what Ganpati Bappa means to her family, Isha’s answer is clear. “He is our revered deity,” she shared. “Our family has celebrated Ganesh Utsav since before I was born. It’s a tradition that runs deep in our home.”
Their home carries special traditions for Bappa’s welcome. For many years, they worshipped a gold idol. Today, homemade modaks and laddoos, Bappa’s favorites, are always on the menu. A traditional Saraswat meal is lovingly prepared. This feast is the very first offering when Ganpati Bappa is installed, made with care by family hands.
Choosing a single favorite memory is tough for Isha. Each year creates new, precious moments with Bappa. But she admits her childhood memories are the most deeply rooted. They formed a connection that still holds a special place in her heart.

Isha takes her role seriously in keeping the festival both traditional and kind to the Earth. “My top priority is an eco-friendly Ganpati idol,” she explained. “It must be made of clay that dissolves easily. This ensures no harm comes to our environment.” While the idol is modern in its approach, the aarti and food preparations strictly follow ancient customs. This way, the family honors both tradition and nature.

Her daughter, Riana, dives headfirst into the festivities. Riana loves decorating and singing the aarti. Watching her mother, Riana has formed a strong bond with Bappa. This connection isn’t just for the festival days. It runs deep before and after. Riana is fully involved in every step, from Bappa’s arrival to his immersion.
If she had to pick one blessing or piece of advice from Bappa, it would be for a sound mind. Isha often recalls the saying, “Vinash Kaal Viprit Buddhi,” meaning when trouble looms, wisdom might fail. She believes money and fame are temporary. They can be lost and gained again. But a clear mind and a peaceful heart are true treasures. Her constant prayer is for Bappa’s presence and blessings to always fill their hearts, minds, and souls.
