Irving and Doncic don’t know how to win

When you bring together players who have never shared a basketball court, the logical thing is that they need time to understand each other, get used to each other. For things to really work. We suppose that this will be what the fans of the Dallas Mavericks are thinking after seeing how their team has lost again, already two of two, with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving together. There was a point not too long ago in the season when the Mavs were unable to win without Doncic (0-7). Then they got two wins in a row without the Slovenian, the second in Irving’s first game. Now the pending subject is to win with both. Who was going to tell him?

Two days ago they fell into overtime in Sacramento after De’Aaron Fox scored on them between the fourth quarter and overtime. Today that player on a roll was Irving, who scored 26 of his 36 goals in the last 12 minutes. It’s the highest-scoring fourth quarter of his career and it was a race against time to reduce a lead that reached 26 points midway through the third quarter. Until then the Wolves had played their game, with an Anthony Edwards who is going to play his first All Star because, indeed, he is an All Star player. 32 points for him, his top scorer. Also a great meeting for Rudy Gobert (21+14), which is already official that he plays better without Towns by his side. It’s funny how the simple addition of stars doesn’t always make teams better. And also Mike Conley (12 and 9 assists), shooting less than De’Angelo Russell but with effectiveness and giving the team what it needs in management.

Opposite, 69 points between Doncic and Irving. 33 of the Slovenian, from more to less, and 36 of his new partner, from less to more. A version very similar to that of Sacramento, in which they already seemed to understand each other for a large part of the match, but in which they are still not able to multiply the benefits that each one gets. They respect each other, they let themselves be done, but it is difficult for them to add at the same time. We have seen a great Doncic and a great Irving, but hardly ever at the same time. If Jason Kidd makes that happen he’ll have a weapon of mass destruction. At the moment he has two large-caliber pistols that do not fire at the same time and with which he has not beaten anyone yet.
