Kashmir has produced very few cricketers who have represented the Indian cricket team. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan has now spoken out on this issue. At a press conference at the Radisson Hotel, he said young people in Kashmir have a huge passion for cricket. However, they lack the opportunities and infrastructure to take their game to the next level. Pathan was in Srinagar to launch the Epic Victory Cricket League (EVCL), a new tournament that aims to bridge this gap and uncover raw talent.
Turning passion into opportunity
Pathan said he has seen firsthand the potential of young cricketers from Kashmir. “I’ve seen it myself – a left-arm fast bowler from Kupwara, boys from Baramulla, they have the fire in their belly. What they lack is exposure and proper training,” he said. The Epic Victory Cricket League will feature retired Ranji Trophy players, providing a platform for young talent to rub shoulders with experienced players. Former India fast bowler Praveen Kumar recently expressed his excitement about the league’s launch in Noida and will be a mentor in the upcoming tournament.
The league is not just limited to Jammu and Kashmir. It will also provide opportunities for young players from states like Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Pathan said the tournament will be a mix of emerging talent and experienced domestic players, offering a chance for guidance and learning.
A life-changing platform
Pathan, who took 301 international wickets for India, said the EVCL is more than just a tournament – it’s a life-changing platform. He emphasized the need for better cricket infrastructure in Kashmir, pointing out that many districts still play on matting wickets. “If we want to prepare players for national-level competitions, it’s time we start preparing turf wickets,” he said.
Pathan is also excited to see female cricketers emerging from Kashmir. He has worked closely with cricketers in the region during his time with the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) and has seen the hunger for cricket in remote areas of the valley.
