Iranian Parliament Backs Closing Strait of Hormuz Amid US Tensions

The world holds its breath as Iran’s parliament backs a drastic move: closing the Strait of Hormuz. This vital waterway is the route for 25% of the world’s oil shipments. If Iran shuts it down, oil prices will skyrocket. The Strait is a narrow passage between Iran and Oman, and its closure would be a first – a direct consequence of the Israel-Iran conflict on global oil transport.

The real power to close the Strait lies with Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, not its parliament. Analysts think Iran won’t shut it down, though. There are too many US troops in the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas. Any move against the Strait would trigger a US military response – essentially a declaration of war on the entire region.

Iran probably won’t attack oil tankers either, as long as their own exports aren’t affected. However, they might step up harassment of tankers passing through the Strait in the coming days. US Vice President JD Vance warned that closing the Strait would be “economic suicide” for Iran, since their economy relies heavily on it. If they want to harm their own economy and create global chaos, that’s their choice.

This situation is unfolding after the US bombed an Iranian nuclear facility. The bombing happened early Sunday, June 22, 2025. Iran’s response is being closely watched. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint, and any disruption to oil shipments would have far-reaching consequences.
