Galabov was lethal for the Czech Republic

What a day it was at the World Volleyball Championship in the Philippines. Tuesday brought some big surprises. Iran pulled off a stunning upset, beating Serbia 3-2. This win punched their ticket to the quarterfinals. There, they will face the Czech Republic, who also advanced by shutting out Tunisia 3-0.

Iran’s victory was a true shocker. They took down a Serbian team known for its strong history. Serbia earned bronze in 2010, finished fourth in the last tournament, and won silver in 1998 as Yugoslavia. Iran defeated them in a thrilling five-set battle. The scores were 23-25, 25-19, 24-26, 25-22, and a decisive 15-9. This was the final match of the Round of 16.

These last two Round of 16 games saw the second-place teams from their groups shine. Iran, second in Group A, overcame Group H winner Serbia. The Czech Republic, second in Group H, beat Group A winner Tunisia. Now, both winning teams will meet on Thursday in the quarterfinals.

The game between Serbia and Iran was a real nail-biter. Serbia had topped Group H, even ahead of the Czech Republic. Iran came in second in Group A, with Tunisia taking the top spot. Every point mattered, and the match came down to small moments.

Serbia grabbed the first set, 25-23. Iran fought back and took the second set, 25-19. The European team then edged ahead again, winning the third set 26-24. But Iran refused to quit, leveling the match once more with a 25-22 win.

The deciding fifth set belonged entirely to Iran. They played with greater consistency. They quickly built a five-point lead, making it 10-5. Iran held onto that advantage, closing out the set 15-9. That win sealed their spot in the quarterfinals.

The Czech Republic also made history. They qualified for the quarterfinals of the World Championship for the first time ever as an independent nation. Of course, they carry the legacy of Czechoslovakia. That team won two world titles and four silver medals in the first six editions of the tournament.

The Czech Republic finished second in Group H. They even pushed Brazil out of the Round of 16, though both teams had six points. Their path to the quarterfinals involved a clean 3-0 sweep against Tunisia. The set scores were 25-19, 25-18, and 25-23.

The Czechs controlled the first set from the very start. They kept a steady four-point lead. Later, they stretched it to six points at 20-14, easily closing the set 25-19.

Dominance continued for the Czech Republic in the second set. It was close early on, 8-7. But they quickly pulled away, keeping Tunisia about five points behind at 21-16. They finished the set 25-18, giving them a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set played out much differently. Tunisia came out strong, using powerful serves to take a 4-0 lead. They even stretched that advantage to seven points, at 14-7. However, the Czechs staged a comeback. Inspired by Jan Galabov, who plays for Sporting, they took the lead. They ultimately won the set 25-23, securing the 3-0 match victory.

With these results, all quarterfinal matchups are now set. On Wednesday, Italy will play Belgium, and Poland will face Turkey. Thursday promises more excitement with the United States taking on Bulgaria, and the newly set clash between the Czech Republic and Iran.
