An Iranian court has sentenced to death a man accused of murdering the well-known filmmaker Dariush Mehrjui and his wife were stabbed to death in their home near Tehran in October, the judiciary reported on Monday.
Mehrjui, one of the most important directors of the Iranian cinemaand his wife, Vahideh Mohammadifarwere stabbed to death on October 14, 2023 at their residence in Karaj, Alborz province, west of Tehran.
The main defendant was convicted at the request of the victim’s family under the “law of retribution”, which is used in murder cases in Iran, said the President of the Supreme Court of Alborz Province, Hosein Fazeli-Harikandi, quoted by the justice agency Mizan Online .
The convicted man, who was arrested a few days after the crime, worked as a gardener for Mehrjui and was annoyed by “financial problems,” he explained during the trial. Fazeli Harikandi.
According to the Iranian judiciary, the convict entered the house of Mehrjui, 83, along with three other people accused as accomplices beat him and then stabbed him in the neck. His wife, 54 years old, was murdered in her room.
Mehrjui is known for films like “Cow“(1969)”Hamoun” (1990), which shows 24 hours in the life of an intellectual plagued by divorce and his psychological torment, and “Leila” (1997), a melodrama about a barren woman who encourages her husband to marry a second wife.
