Iran postpones execution of man detained at age 17

Iran has postponed the planned execution of a man arrested for murder when he was 17, but the latter remains at imminent risk of being hanged, Amnesty International and other human rights organizations said Wednesday.

Arman Abdolali, now 25, was convicted in a trial that human rights groups called unfair. His scheduled execution has raised new international criticism about the use of the death penalty in Iran.

The execution was scheduled for Wednesday, and although it did not take place, it is feared that it may take place on Saturday, Amnesty International and Iran Human Rights (IHR) said.

"You are still running the risk of imminent execution. He was only 17 when he was arrested"Amnesty said on Twitter.

Human rights groups claim that international conventions signed by Iran prohibit executing anyone for a crime committed under the age of 18.

Iran executes more people each year than any other nation except China. The IHR said that at least 64 juvenile offenders have been executed in Iran in the past 10 years, and that at least four will be executed in 2020.

Germany’s human rights commissioner Baerbel Kofler said carrying out the execution would be a "unacceptable violation of international law".

"Arman Abdolali was a minor at the time of the alleged crime. There is credible evidence that his confession was obtained under torture and that the conviction therefore contradicts the fundamental principles of the rule of law"he said in a statement released by the German Foreign Ministry.
