Iran has sentenced 10 officials for the downing of the Ukrainian plane

An Iranian court sentenced 10 security officials to one to 10 years in prison for downing a Ukrainian passenger plane.

In January 2020, Iran’s military shot down a Ukrainian plane in Tehran with 2 missile attacks, killing all 176 people on board, including the crew.

According to the Iranian news agency, the court sentenced the commander of the army to 10 years and other officials from one to three years in prison for the downing of the Ukrainian plane.

According to the report, the court also ordered the accused to pay compensation to the families of the plane crash victims.

Iranian media cited its court as saying that the case involved 117 plaintiffs, of whom 55 testified in court while 20 were represented by lawyers.

The majority of the passengers on board the crashed Ukrainian Airlines plane were Iranian citizens, while the plane also had passengers from Canada, Ukraine, United Kingdom and Afghanistan.

Iran initially denied taking responsibility for the downing of the plane by missile strikes, but 3 days later admitted to downing the plane, calling it a catastrophic mistake.
