Iran: 5 dead and 40 injured in magnitude 6 earthquake

Five people were killed and dozens of others injured in a shallow earthquake of magnitude 6 which shook southern Iran on Saturday July 2, according to an initial report released by the state news agency Irna. According to state television, 49 people were injured in Hormozgan province.

The earthquake occurred around 2 a.m. local time with a magnitude of 6 at a depth of 10 miles, according to the United States Seismological Institute (USGS). It was followed by two other aftershocks, two hours later, with a magnitude of 5.7 and 6, at a depth of 10 km, according to the same source.

According to television footage, several residential buildings collapsed in Sayeh Khosh, the village hardest hit by the earthquake and plunged into darkness following a power outage. Electricity was also cut in nearly 30 villages located in the affected areas, according to public television. Search and rescue operations are almost over, the country’s Red Crescent reported.
