IPMA Forecasts Weekend Rain, Temperature Drop for Mainland Portugal

Rain forecast for mainland Portugal this weekend due to a cold front

The weekend forecast is shaping up to be a true curveball for sports fans and athletes alike. Our national weather service, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), just issued an update. They predict a significant wet spell for the mainland. This change comes from a cold front, the visible edge of a low-pressure system parked northwest of the Iberian Peninsula. It’s a reminder that even the biggest games sometimes bow to Mother Nature.

According to a statement released on Thursday, the rain will begin its grand entrance Saturday night. The northern and central coastal regions will be the first to feel its impact. By Sunday, the wet weather will have spread its reach, covering the entire mainland territory. Any outdoor events or training sessions planned for the weekend now face a major challenge.

Coaches and players, particularly in those coastal zones, should take note. The IPMA warned that this passing frontal system could bring some very heavy downpours. These intense bursts of rain are most likely to hit those specific regions until late Sunday morning. It means early starts for outdoor activities might be quite soggy, if not outright canceled.

Beyond the rain, another big change is coming: temperature drops. Sunday will see maximum temperatures fall sharply across the board. Inland areas can expect a significant cool-down, with readings dropping between six and ten degrees. Along the coast, the maximums will dip by three to six degrees. This sudden chill could affect athletic performance and fan comfort alike.

Even with the cooler air, maximum temperatures are still expected to range from 23 to 27 degrees. The minimum overnight temperatures, thankfully, will not change much. However, both these temperature ranges are lower than what we typically experience for this time of year. It’s a definite sign that the seasons are shifting.

Looking further ahead, don’t stash away those rain gear items just yet. The IPMA foresees more frontal waves moving across the northern and central parts of the mainland. This suggests continued rainfall in those areas until at least the middle of the upcoming week. It means outdoor sports will need to adapt for a bit longer than just the weekend.
