The Indian Premier League’s 18th season has come to a close, with Royal Challengers Bangalore taking home their first-ever title. But what about the teams that didn’t make it to the top? Do they go home empty-handed? Not quite.
Let’s start with the winners. Royal Challengers Bangalore pocketed a cool 20 crore rupees in prize money for their championship win, while runners-up Punjab Kings took home 13 crore rupees. But the money doesn’t stop there. Even teams that didn’t make it to the finals get a significant chunk of change.
How teams make money
So, how do IPL teams make money? For starters, there’s the media rights deal. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) sold the media rights for the 2023-27 season for a whopping 48,390 crore rupees. And the best part? A significant portion of that money goes straight to the teams. According to reports, each team gets around 467 crore rupees from the media rights deal alone.
But that’s not all. Teams also make money from sponsorships. We’re talking big bucks here – upwards of 100 crore rupees for top teams like Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore. And then there are the ticket sales. When a team plays at home, they get to keep 80% of the revenue from ticket sales.
Sponsorships and merchandise
Sponsorships are a big deal in the IPL. Teams have sponsors plastered all over their jerseys and kits, and it’s a lucrative business. But what about merchandise? Fans love buying team jerseys, hats, and other gear, and that’s a significant revenue stream for teams. In fact, reports suggest that merchandise sales could reach 30 billion dollars by 2025.
And let’s not forget about the prize money. While the winners take home the biggest chunk, even teams that finish lower in the standings get a significant amount of money. Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans, who finished third and fourth respectively, took home a substantial amount of prize money.
So, there you have it. The IPL may be a competitive tournament, but even teams that don’t win it all can still take home a pretty penny. Whether it’s through media rights, sponsorships, or merchandise sales, there are plenty of ways for teams to make money in the IPL.
