The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 has been put on hold for a week, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday, May 9. The decision has sparked speculation about the future of the remaining matches. BCCI Vice President Rajiv Shukla has shed some light on what’s next.
New Schedule to be Announced
Rajiv Shukla revealed that the new schedule will be decided after consulting the government, franchises, and broadcasters. The BCCI will assess the situation and discuss it with the relevant parties before making an announcement. Shukla emphasized that the safety of players is a top priority.
The decision to suspend the IPL comes after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match was abruptly halted on Thursday. Fans were evacuated, and players were quickly sent back to their hotels. IPL Chairman Arun Singh Dhumal later explained that the power cut and faulty floodlights were used as a pretext to prevent a potential stampede.
Remaining Matches
58 matches have been played so far in IPL 2025, but it’s unclear if the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match will be replayed. At least 12 league stage matches are still pending. The BCCI has assured that it stands with the government and the Indian Army, and the safety of players is being taken seriously.
Shukla expressed pride in the Indian Army and said that the BCCI is committed to supporting them. The new schedule is expected to be announced after the consultation process is complete.
