iPhone: soon satellite calls in case of emergency?

As the buzz rises around the iPhone 13 for their presentation in September, Apple’s plans are under scrutiny by technology experts. Most recently, the possibility of making satellite calls would be considered.

The idea is to be able to do without 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, but also WiFi when these are not available in certain remote areas. In absolute terms, there would be no question here of giving news of the youngest to the grandparents, but of being able to contact any rescue service in an emergency, says Bloomberg, which highlights this future function.

The latter would still be in the boxes of Apple according to the American news site which emphasizes that, except surprise, satellite calls would not be relevant on the iPhone 13 which will be launched this year. Bloomberg details that it would be possible to use the Messages application, to share an SOS with a restricted text length. Pre-defined messages could also be integrated to quickly describe the situation.

One minute to reach the emergency services

Voice calls could also be made via this solution in the event of a serious accident, disaster or absolute emergency, which would allow for example access to 112 (the European emergency number). It would then be advisable to be outside and wait about 60 seconds to be put in touch with the emergency services, the call providing them with your GPS position and your medical card (blood type …), if you completed it in the mobile health application.

However, not all countries will be affected by such a feature, since it will be necessary to ensure the compatibility of this technology with the different territories, satellite coverage as well as an agreement with local authorities to access it, transmissions by satellite obeying a different protocol.
