iOS 15: What is iCloud Private Relay?

One of the new features that iOS 15 has brought is Retransmission Private, which aims to protect your privacy while browsing.

Typically, your ISP and the websites you visit know your IP address. This can be used to identify you and set up a location profile and browsing history over time.

The purpose of iCloud Private Relay is that no one, not even Apple, can see your identity or the pages you visit while browsing with Safari.

This feature makes your Internet browsing go through two independent and secure servers. Your ISP will be able to see your real IP address, but will not know which page you want to visit as the web server name will be encrypted.

On the other hand, the website you visit will only see the IP address of the second browsing server, so it won’t be able to identify it. Also, this address is random and temporary, so you will not be able to create a browsing profile.

How to enable Private Relay

To enable Private Relay, go to Settings> [tu nombre] > iCloud > Private Relay.

You can also tap the IP address location to select a setting for your IP address:

  • Keep general location allows websites to show content located in Safari, but its IP address is still hidden.
  • Use country and time zone provides a less precise location for your IP address, but still indicates your country and time zone.
