International Judo Federation Lifts Suspension on Portuguese Judokas

Portugal’s judo team is back in action. The International Judo Federation (FIJ) is lifting a suspension that kept them out of global competitions. This move comes after the Portuguese Judo Federation (FPJ) got word that the ban would be lifted, thanks to progress on paying off a €800,000 debt.

A New Chance for Portuguese Judokas

Seven Portuguese athletes are set to compete in the World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The event runs from June 13 to 20. Catarina Costa, Taís Pina, Patrícia Sampaio, Miguel Gago, Otari Kvantidze, João Fernando, and Jorge Fonseca will represent Portugal in their respective weight classes.

The Portuguese Judo Federation announced the news, stating that the suspension that barred athletes from competing under the national flag in international events would be lifted. This means the team can now participate in the World Championships and other global competitions. The FPJ shared the update with the Lusa news agency, confirming the end of the suspension.

  1. Catarina Costa will compete in the -48 kg category.
  2. Taís Pina will fight in the -70 kg category.
  3. Patrícia Sampaio will compete in the -78 kg category.
  4. Miguel Gago will participate in the -66 kg category.
  5. Otari Kvantidze will compete in the -73 kg category.
  6. João Fernando will fight in the -81 kg category.
  7. Jorge Fonseca will participate in the -100 kg category.

The World Championships in Budapest will be a crucial test for the Portuguese judokas, who are eager to make their mark on the global stage. With the suspension lifted, they can now focus on their training and preparation for the competition.
