Debris from an intercepted Iranian ballistic missile killed one person in Abu Dhabi as a wave of drone and rocket attacks targeted energy infrastructure and diplomatic facilities across the Middle East. The fatality, identified as a Pakistani national, occurred in the Bani Yas area after United Arab Emirates air defense systems intercepted the incoming threat.
The coordinated strikes severely disrupted regional travel and energy operations. Dubai Airport temporarily suspended landing permissions for incoming flights and the United Arab Emirates briefly closed its airspace after a drone strike sparks fire at the Fujairah Oil Industry Zone. Operations were also suspended at the UAE’s Shah gas and oil field following a separate drone attack.
Iranian drones and rockets simultaneously targeted southern Iraqi oil infrastructure and a United States diplomatic facility near the Baghdad airport. The Iranian military promised the strikes in retaliation for a recent US submarine torpedo attack in the Indian Ocean that sank the Iranian warship IRIS Dena, an incident that reportedly killed over 80 sailors.
The regional escalation stems from a broader conflict that erupted on February 28, 2026, following coordinated American and Israeli strikes on Iranian military infrastructure. Those initial strikes killed Iran’s 86-year-old Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. His son, Mojtaba Khamenei, was appointed as the new Supreme Leader after reportedly surviving the targeted strike by stepping outside their compound minutes before the blast.
The US military claims to have struck over 7,000 targets in Iran to degrade its ballistic missile and drone capabilities. In retaliation, Iran continues to launch projectiles at Israel and American military installations across Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain.
The ongoing conflict has severely disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, pushing Brent crude oil prices to around $100 per barrel. United States President Donald Trump demanded that international allies deploy warships to secure the strait and escort oil tankers, a request several allies have rebuffed amid the widening military crisis.
