Intel Core i9-12900HK: the mobile CPU dethrones the Apple M1 Max and becomes the most powerful on Geekbench

While Intel Alder Lake desktop processors are highly anticipated, chips for laptops should be just as interesting. A first benchmark of the Intel Core i9-12900HK reveals that it explodes its competitors.

Last week, Apple presented two new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips with its new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and these promised to be overpowering. However, it seems that the new Intel Core i9-12900HK will raise the bar even higher, as revealed by a first benchmark on Geekbench.

According to Wccftech figures, with 1851 points on one core and 13256 points on multiple cores, the Alder Lake processor would exceed its predecessor by 14.5% and 44.8 respectively. The mobile processor is also fining AMD, sinceit outperforms AMD’s Ryzen 9 5980HX by 22.9% single-core and 61.3% multi-core. The most amazing thing is that the Intel Core i9-12900HK has managed to achieve scores 3% higher than Apple’s M1 Max chip. However, Apple’s chip would be much more energy efficient thanks to its ARM architecture.

What do we know about Intel’s i9-12900HK?

The benchmark revealed that the Intel Core i9-12900HK is composed of 14 cores and 20 threads. We find 6 P Golden Cove hearts (Performance) as well as 8 E Gracemont hearts (Efficiency). The latter promise to be as powerful as Skylake, but 80% less energy intensive.

The Intel Core i9-12900HK should obviously not be the most powerful Alder Lake chip, since Intel is also working on a high-end Intel Core i9-12900K chip for desktop computers. This has already been tested in a few benchmarks, and even overclocked before its release. By pushing the frequency of its P cores, it would consume about 330 W at 5.2 GHz and almost 400 W at 5.3 GHz. It is therefore not surprising that the processor will easily outperform all of its competitors in the market.
