Instagram Launches Native iPad App After 15 Years: Redesigned Experience

It feels like a tech eternity has passed. For nearly 15 years, Instagram users on Apple’s iPad have lived with a clunky, scaled-up iPhone app. It was a digital oddity, a powerful social network living in an ill-fitting shell. But the wait is over. Instagram has finally delivered a native iPad app, sporting a fresh look and features made for the tablet’s bigger display. This isn’t just a stretched-out phone app; it’s a completely reimagined experience.

The relationship between Instagram and the iPhone started in October 2010, a truly iconic partnership. Android users joined the party a bit later, in April 2012. Yet, the iPad always seemed to be the forgotten child. When Instagram first launched, the iPad was already six months old. Still, it never got an app built just for its screen, a puzzling omission that frustrated users for years. Now, in September 2025, Instagram has finally listened to those patient requests.

A Fresh Face for Instagram on iPad

The official Instagram app for iPad, now available, stands apart from its mobile cousin. Its interface was completely rethought. This new design makes the most of the iPad’s bigger screen, making everything much better to use. You can now see messages and notifications at the same time. No more jumping between different menus.

The changes are clear right away. Stories still sit at the top, just where you expect them. Reels now pop in full screen, giving you a bigger view of your favorite short videos. Overall navigation feels smoother and easier to use. A neat trick allows you to expand comments on a Reel without stopping the video. The Reel keeps playing softly in the background, keeping you in the action.

Better Feed Organization and Messaging

Content organization also got a boost. The “Following” tab has been redesigned. It now splits into three distinct views. This gives you more control over what you see in your feed:

  • All: Shows recommended posts and Reels from everyone you follow.
  • Friends: Displays content only from accounts that follow you back.
  • Latest: Orders posts by time, putting the newest content first.

Direct messages also get a fresh spotlight. You can now check your inbox while still keeping an open conversation window. This makes chatting and browsing at the same time a breeze.

Deep iPadOS Integration and How to Get It

This new app was designed to work seamlessly with the iPadOS system. It supports multitasking and floating windows in the upcoming iPadOS 26 (currently in beta). You can use it in full-screen mode, both vertically and horizontally. It also works fully with your keyboard, trackpad, and Apple Pencil.

You can download the app right now from the App Store. It runs on any iPad with iPadOS 15.1 or newer. If you already had the iPhone version on your tablet, simply update it. The old app will automatically switch to this new, optimized design.

In the past, Adam Mosseri, who leads Instagram, said they didn’t make an iPad app because not enough people wanted it to make it worth the effort. That old excuse is definitely a thing of the past. As confirmed by Instagram’s official blog, users can finally enjoy a proper iPad experience.
