Volcanic ash cloud rises over Indonesia after a powerful eruption. The eruption of Mount Lewotobi Lakilaki, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, sent ash clouds soaring over 11 kilometers into the air. Authorities have raised the alert level to its highest point.
This massive eruption happened on Tuesday, June 17, 2023, at 5:35 pm local time. It caused a large ash cloud to spread over the island of Flores. The government has created a 7-kilometer no-go zone around the volcano to keep people safe.
So far, no one has been reported hurt or killed. But officials are warning people not to go near the volcano. If it rains, there’s a chance of a “lahar flood” – a dangerous mix of water, ash, and rocks. People living near the volcano are being told to wear face masks to protect themselves from the ash.
Some villagers have had to leave their homes because the ground is still shaking. Ash from the volcano has also fallen on other villages outside the no-go zone. The national disaster agency says everyone needs to be careful and follow the rules to stay safe.
Mount Lewotobi Lakilaki is known for its frequent eruptions. The last time it erupted was in May, and no one was hurt. But the eruption before that, in November 2023, was much worse – 9 people died, and thousands had to leave their homes. Many flights were also canceled.
