A quiet night on the ocean turned into a sudden crisis off the Indonesian island of Bali. A ferry, carrying dozens of people, unexpectedly sank late Wednesday. This tragic event has led to at least four confirmed deaths. Many others remain missing, raising serious concerns about maritime safety in the region.
The ill-fated vessel was traveling from Banyuwangi, a town on the eastern coast of Java. Its destination was the popular tourist island of Bali. There were 65 people on board in total. This included 53 passengers and 12 crew members. The ferry went down around 11:20 PM local time.
As Thursday morning dawned, rescue teams worked tirelessly. The Surabaya National Search and Rescue Agency reported finding four survivors. They were pulled from a life raft. All four of these individuals were from Banyuwangi, the ferry’s starting point. Search operations are still ongoing to find those who are missing.
Local news photos showed ambulances waiting to help. People from the area also gathered by the roadside. They stood there, hoping for news about the missing.
Authorities are now investigating what caused the ferry to sink. The company operating the boat told local media that the crew reported engine trouble. This happened just before the vessel went underwater.
The route between Java and Bali is a very busy one. Both local residents and tourists use these sea lanes often. Indonesia is a massive country made up of more than 17,000 islands. Because of this, sea travel is crucial for many. Sadly, marine accidents are a common occurrence here. Safety rules are often not enforced well or consistently.
Just last March, a similar incident occurred. An Australian tourist died when a passenger boat sank near Bali. That boat had 16 people aboard.
