Indonesia Cracks Down on Destructive Fishing, Arrests 101 Suspects with Explosives and Chemicals

Indonesian police have arrested 101 people suspected of destructive fishing practices. The suspects were caught during a nationwide crackdown on illegal fishing methods.

Destructive Fishing Methods

The arrested individuals are accused of using banned fishing gear, explosives, chemicals, and electric shockers. Authorities seized evidence, including detonators, ammonium nitrate, fishing boats, diving gear, and illegally caught fish.

Destructive fishing methods harm marine ecosystems and the environment. The Indonesian government is taking a firm stance against these practices.

Penalties for Destructive Fishing

Those found guilty of using explosives to catch fish could face life imprisonment or up to 20 years in prison. Other destructive fishing methods can result in up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to 10 billion rupiah, around $665,000.

The crackdown is part of efforts to protect Indonesia’s marine resources. Police say the operation is a significant step in enforcing laws and safeguarding the country’s oceans.
